Hello to the North Cavan School Community,

We hope that you have had a wonderful summer doing things that you enjoy!  The last few days of August are drawing to a close and we are excited to welcome students, families and staff to North Cavan for the 2024 - 2025 school year.  We are looking forward to a year "Working Together to Be the Best that We can Be!"

During the first few days of the school year we will be working on establishing our routines and procedures with our students.  We wanted to share in advance with families a change to one of our school routines - thinking this will help with your planning and perhaps scheduling of any appointments for your children.

We will be returning to a practice for our Nutrition Breaks that North Cavan has used in the past.  At each break time, students will go outside for 20 minutes of play time/recess and this will the be followed by 20 minutes of eating time.  Please see the chart below for specifics:

A few friendly reminders about Student Transportation Services of Central Ontario's (STSCO) Opt In program regarding School Bus Services:

You need to opt-in for transportation if your family is eligible. Visit the website www.stsco.ca  to determine your eligibility and create a parent portal account with the email address that you provided to the school when you registered your child(ren).  For new school registrations, it takes about 72 hours for the student information to be transferred from the school to STSCO and be reflected in the parent portal. Students currently registered at North Cavan should be able to see their information now.  You can then see your child(ren) in your parent portal.  You can proceed with submitting an Opt-in request.

 

There are 4 ways for families to Opt-in for transportation

1. Opt-in for Home to School Transportation for eligible students needing transportation servicing the eligible home address on file. The parent must complete this online form through the parent portal.
2. Opt-in for Alternate Address (Daycare/Sitter) Transportation for students needing transportation servicing an alternate address for the purpose of before & after school care. The parent must complete this online form through the parent portal.
3. Opt-in for Out-of-Boundary Consideration for students who are not eligible for transportation to their school of attendance and live outside the schools walk zone area. The parent must complete this online form through the parent portal.
4. Opt-in for Joint/Shared Custody Transportation for students in a shared custody living arrangement, where both home addresses are eligible for transportation based on the students’ grade & program, the parents may submit a paper request form at the school for consideration. It can be emailed or printed for the parent to complete. Completed forms must be returned to the school for the Principal to review and sign and then the school will email it to the area Route Planning Specialist. This request cannot be submitted online through the parent portal.

 

This information was shared at the end of last school year but we felt it was information worth sharing again.

Lunchbox Program is available to go in and place your orders for this year.

The program will start the second week of September 2024.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to begin to receive email notifications regarding upcoming events involving your child(ren).

Step 1: Register

1. If you have not registered, please go to the School Cash Online home page https://kprdsb.schoolcashonline.com/   and select the “Get Started Today”

1. Complete each of the three Registration Steps

*For Security Reasons your password, requires 8 characters,   one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and a number.

Step 2: Confirmation Email

A registration confirmation email will be forwarded to you.  Click on the link provided inside the email to confirm your email and School Cash Online account. The confirmation link will open the School Cash Online site prompting you to sign into your account.  Use your email address and password just created with your account.

Step 3: Find Student

This step will connect your children to your account. a) Enter the School Board Name.

1. Enter the School Name.
2. Enter Your Child’s First Name, Last Name and Birth Date.
3. Select
4. On the next page confirm that you are related to the child, check in the Agree box and select
5. Your child has been added to your account.

Step 4: View Items or Add Another Student 

If you have more children, select “Add Another Student” and repeat the steps above. 8 children can be added to one parent account. If you do not wish to add additional children, select “View Items For Students” option.  A listing of available items for purchase will be displayed.

As part of the renovations projects at North Cavan this summer, work was done on a new well.  Testing has been completed on our water.  The water advisory for our school that was in place this spring has been lifted.

Students and staff are able to use the water fountain and the water bottle filling station again as normal.

Please send a refillable water with you child each day that has their name on it.  If you could send it to school full we will be able to refill it during the course of the school day if needed from our water bottle filling station.

Thank you to our Breakfast Club Volunteers - today we enjoyed Special Muffins to celebrate the first week of school.  So tasty!

Absentee & Sibling Photo Day will take place on November 6th, 2024.  Photos will be taken of the students who were absent when we had our pictures taken in September.  Sibling Photos must have a permission form sent to the Office by November 5th, so we can have the groups organized for November 6th.  Forms were sent out by Messenger to all of you as well.  Don't forget to bring your smiles!

Progress Report Cards and Kindergarten Communication of Learning, will be coming home with the students today, Wednesday, November 20th, 2024.  They will be available on Edsby after 4:00 p.m.  Educators will be communicating Interview times.

Please send the empty Report Card Envelope back tomorrow to your child's Homeroom teacher.  Thank you.

Mark your calendars and wear your neon colours for the North Cavan Dance-a-Thon on March 5, 2025.

We will have glow sticks on sale at the door for $1.00.  We will have the opportunity to dance with a dance instructor, Natalie Wittek.  

All proceeds will go towards guest speakers and presentations for our students, such as Jimmie Chapman and Nature Nancy.

Hello North Cavan Families,

We are excited to invite you to an evening activity for North Cavan students and their parents/guardians to embark on a math challenge in the form of an Amazing Race. You are invited to play the Amazing Race: Math Edition with your child(ren), solving clues and moving from one activity to the next. At each station, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the math curriculum through hands-on math work and collaborative problem-solving. 

The Race begins promptly at 5:00 p.m. in the gym. There will be 10 stations at various locations throughout the school to visit. 

Families are invited to join us in the gym for the event kick-off between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. A pizza slice will be provided for family members who complete the pizza request form  . Please complete the form by Monday, April 14 at noon. 

In addition, the Scholastic Book Fair will be taking place. One station will include a stop at the book fair. Only participants in the Amazing Race will be invited to the Library Learning Commons between race times of 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. There will be other times available for students to visit the book fair during the week of April 14-16. NCPS School Council has been busy planning this year's Fun Fair, and the excitement is building!  To make this event extra special, we're reaching out to families for support with donations.  Instead of asking each class to contribute specific baskets like during the skate night, we're inviting families to donate any items they can.  The School Council will organize and assemble baskets with these contributions.

Your generosity and involvement strengthen our school community and make wonderful event like this possible.  If you are able to donate, please have it at the office by May 2nd.  This allows School Council members ample time to prepare these wonderful baskets and finalize details for the Fair.
